This week is Oktoberfest at Longwood! Oktoberfest is one of Longwood’s two big weekends! This year the theme is Farmvegas. We refer to Farmville as Farmvegas and the theme just seemed to fit! I am so excited for this week because it is my last Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is one of those great traditions that you will always want to return to, even after you have graduated. However, I know that being on the other side will not be the same. That is why I want to go all out for all of the spirit days and traditions!

Similar to Homecoming at other schools, Oktoberfest has themed days. Today’s theme was putting the Vegas in Farmvegas, tomorrow is the Oktoberfest t-shirt day, Wednesday is Longwood spirit, Thursday is class colors (red or green) and Friday is white out.

Thursday kicks off Oktoberfest weekend with the Alzheimer’s walk. Friday is color wars: a fun Longwood tradition wear the classes, freshman & juniors=green, sophomores and seniors=red, throw watered down paint on each other to see what color is the dominant color (red obviously is the best class!). After color wars is battle of the bands, which is hosted by the Longwood radio station, WMLU.

Saturday is my favorite day of Oktoberfest. There are booths from various organizations on campus, bands all day, picnics, and lots of fun activities. The whole day is filled with Longwood tradition and fun. This year the headliners are Yung Job and Augustana! (those are the two bands I personally am most excited for).

I know that as a senior and because this is my last Oktoberfest, that this weekend is going to mean a lot to me. Other schools may have Homecoming, but Longwood has the best tradition yet! Oktoberfest 2011 :)
