Scarves.
You wear them when it’s hot outside. You wear them to look fashionable. But do you wear them to represent schools spirit? Longwood students do.
Since 2010, Longwood has celebrated its annual athletic and spirit event called the Greatest Athletic March Ever (GAME) during the first weekend back at school. Each of the past two years, a scarf has been given away at the GAME. At first, the scarf wasn’t a huge deal. Then, people began to see the scarf in a different light.
While there were plenty of scarves leftover in 2010, this year saw a huge decline in the scarf surplus. In fact, people wanted the scarf so bad, they were all given away within ten minutes of the GAME starting.
Why? Students and everyone else at and associated with Longwood seemed to find the scarf as more than just a neck warmer. The scarf represented a sense of passion and pride for every Lancer and lover of Longwood.
I was lucky enough to interview the face behind the pride, the scarf, and talk about Scarf Month. This 29-day celebration will get you $2 at Pairet’s, a famous clothing and accessory store downtown, if you wear your scarf.
The scarf told me that this is all an effort to spread the news of Lancer pride so everyone can enjoy the warmth the scarf truly spread.
