I am from the rural dirt roads of Botetourt County, Virginia. I choose Longwood because of its size and friendly atmosphere. I am heavily involved in my school and community both here in Farmville and back home in Eagle Rock, Virginia.

I serve as News Editor for The Rotunda, the student newspaper here on campus, and have been writing for the paper since March 2009. I am also a Sergeant-At-Arms for the Longwood University Judicial Board. I have spent this summer discovering the world of online freelance journalism and have quite enjoyed myself.

Eating with Important People

Money.

There was a lot of it in the room, I guess you’d say.

I ventured to Richmond Thursday with a few other people from Longwood for the Virginia 21 Spring Conference. Virginia 21 is a student-advocacy/lobbying group that tries to gain attention for issues in higher education. The conference consisted of two sessions: one involving the importance of grassroots and another on careers in politics. We heard from Jay Poole, Chairman of the Board for Virginia 21, who used to be a lobbyist for Phillip Morris. This man is great and has been everywhere in politics. He knows them all.

We then had a wonderful lunch, thanks to VCU, where the event was held. A number of very distinguished business persons were in the room. Oh, and Gov. McDonnell stopped by for a few words and a quick bite before he had to run due to some schedule changes after the tornadoes Wednesday.

It was great to be in the same room as all these people who believe in what Virginia 21 is doing. They really support us and that is amazing to see. I know this organization is going far and I’m so proud to be a part of it.
