I’m on one of my parades where I talk about something from the day that makes me want to say “This would sell Longwood to me.” It might be because of the recent presidential inauguration or it might be because of fall beautification efforts, but the mulch around campus is looking pretty good. It’s so crisp and smells so fresh.
The best thing about this mulch is that it came from the university. A lot of the mulch Longwood uses is actually a by-product of the Dorrill Dining Hall, containing food waste from students, faculty and staff.
How great is that? And where else can you find this sort of thing in Virginia? Honestly, you can’t. Longwood is the only campus in the Commonwealth to use a pulper and 100 percent sustainable material for energy. Plus, we have geothermal heating behind the dining hall.
Of course we also do the usual–recycle aluminum and plastic and paper. Lots of it. It’s great to see those pickup trucks going around with all that reusable material on it. Makes me proud to be a Lancer. And hopefully, one day it will you too!
