I am from the rural dirt roads of Botetourt County, Virginia. I choose Longwood because of its size and friendly atmosphere. I am heavily involved in my school and community both here in Farmville and back home in Eagle Rock, Virginia.

I serve as News Editor for The Rotunda, the student newspaper here on campus, and have been writing for the paper since March 2009. I am also a Sergeant-At-Arms for the Longwood University Judicial Board. I have spent this summer discovering the world of online freelance journalism and have quite enjoyed myself.

A Good Day for Lancers and Farmvillians

Limelight.

Yesterday was a great day to be a Lancer and a Farmvillian.

If you’ve yet to hear the news, Longwood University formally accepted a bid to join the Big South athletic conference. The move gives the university that was without a conference for a decade a new home.

This was Longwood’s “BIG” announcement I informed you about the other day. This news was huge to say the least. It was a major step in the direction to improve Longwood’s name recognition and make life easier for our student-athletes.

Also, Farmville was formally recognized as a Virginia Main Street community. The news came just five hours after the Big South press conference held in Blackwell. Even though Farmville has known since last fall that they were granted VMS status, it’s nice to have representatives come to town and actually present the residents with a sign proclaiming this new initiative to improve the downtown area.

Today was a very historic day for the town and the university. If you have ever hesitated about applying to Longwood, today should have been the day in which you really saw what Longwood and Farmville area about. New things are coming to this neck of the woods. And I promise you that you won’t want to miss it. Apply today!
