Last Friday, it was that time of year again! Everyone made their annual pilgrimage from wherever they lived right on down to the rows of the Longwood Landings for Rock The Block, Longwood’s annual block party. Businesses came out and gave free samples of products, coupons, or promotional information for their stores. Students came out to reap the free goodies, enjoy time with their friends, and rock out to the music! While I am sad to say that I didn’t stay for the whole thing and so I missed the annual fireworks display because my allergies gave me a headache, I had a wonderful time nonetheless!
I must say I had great fun looking at all of the people in costume. There was a guy in a pine tree air freshener costume who gave me an air freshener, which now hangs in my bathroom because my car is not currently on campus and I had no better idea of where to put it, the Chick-fil-a cow, and, of course, the Taco Bell sauce packet, a personal favorite after I caught him walking down the road dancing during last year’s festivities.
I went with two of my best friends, Laura and Emily, and we all ran into countless other friends while we walked around, so it was far from being just the three of us. Not only is Rock the Block a spectacular promotional event for Farmville businesses and Longwood organizations, but it is a social event. I saw so many of my friends from my dorm, my classes, and clubs, all having fun in one place on one night. It was enough to bring a smile to my face even when I really wasn’t feeling all that great.
The only complaint I have is actually both a good thing and a bad thing. There were relatively long lines for the balloon hats, free airbrush tattoos, mechanical bull, and giant inflatable chair for posed pictures. However, while these lines did make things a little crazy, it was also a clear indicator of an epic success: so many people wanted to do these things that there were large lines!
Even though my headache was getting worse (It’s allergy season in Farmville and my head has been a bit of a casualty) so I couldn’t stick around for most of the Deloreans’ performance, I had a fantastic time at Rock The Block, which is usually the first Longwood tradition of the year and really sets the mood for the fall semester. The weather is usually amazing, the times are fun, and you really do get some sweet free stuff.
Oh yeah, and by the way, Midtown Mailboxes taped a good fifty-foot-by-four-foot walkway of bubble wrap. It made my friends’ and my night.
Anyway, sorry this blog came about a day late. Last night was a really busy night and I had to postpone the blog, which I wasn’t happy about.
Speaking of happy, though, by the way, Parent’s Weekend is this weekend and Oktoberfest is in just two weeks! I can’t wait to see my family again and Oktoberfest… well, I’ll tell you all about it next week, when it is the eve of the festivities. It needs an entire entry to talk about how amazing it is!
Thanks to Emily, Laura, and Paul for allowing me to use their names and pictures in this week’s blog!
