First off, oh my lord how did I let my blogging slip so much this month? It’s been so crazy :\ Senior year is way busier than I ever expected of it… what a crazy time!
Anyway, between sleep, which I still need despite not having enough hours in the day for it, the time I need to keep myself sane, teaching fieldwork for my teacher work sample, and of course homework, I’ve kind of let this blog fall by the wayside.
Anyway, verbose apology aside, I have been presented with an amazing opportunity by one of the (perhaps too) many organizations I am a part of: the Longwood Association of Teachers of English (LATE) sponsored a trip down to Richmond for the Virginia ATE conference. As I type this, I am sitting in a really cozy chair in the lobby of a Hilton after a day of activities. We had a number of panels and sessions to attend today that gave me a lot of ideas for my future and this was only half a day of sessions! I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring.
I also ended up meeting some new friends that I had previously not talked to too much at LATE meetings and ran into some old friends who are now out in the world teaching. It’s been a wonderful social and academic event. I keep wondering who I’ll run into! I really don’t regret coming along, even though it made planning this weekend a bit difficult.
The best part of all of this? It’s on the school to cover the costs! I’m not saying this to sound like I’m mooching. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Even if we didn’t have a hotel room and just drove down both days, coming to this event would be pretty cost-prohibitive to many college students because of gas, food, hotel fees, registration, and so on. But because this is a wonderful academic experience, the school is willing to spot the money to give us the chance to do this. Plus, our own Drs. Smith and Southall are putting on presentations tomorrow and two LATE members are going to be on a student panel. I’m really interested to see how these go, but I know for a fact that everyone will do Longwood proud.
Peace out to everyone, I’m off to go rest after a long day. Be safe with that hurricane on the horizon and have a good Halloween!
